How Does a Piston Filler Work?

Piston filling machines are a versatile tool that manufacturers can use to fill their packaging. They can handle a wide variety of products from liquids to pastes and even materials with some chunks in them. They can run in both semi-automatic and automatic modes, so that they can meet different production level requirements.

However, while the machines are versatile, it is important to choose the right piston filler for the job. Choosing the right filler machine depends on four things:

  • Your desired production rate
  • What you will be filling
  • What you will be putting in your containers
  • The shape of the container

With a piston filler, you fill the hopper with your product. The piston works much like the syringe on a needle. It pulls back to your preset level, getting the right amount of product for your container. Then a valve moves in the machine, so that when the piston depresses the product is squirted out into your container, instead of moving back into the hopper.

Piston filler are an affordable technology. They are also easy to use and to modify so that you can easily use the piston filler for different product sizes and even for different products. TO change the volume of material that the machine pulls into the filling cylinder, you adjust an outside lever that determines how far the machine retracts the piston.

While piston fillers have been replaced by servo positive displacement fillers in some applications, they remain the most affordable and easiest to use filling option for many products. They are ideally suited for heavy, viscous products. They also handle chunky and creamy products well. This makes them well suited for everything from adhesives to salad dressings. They can also produce fast fill rates, even for thick products, which can make them the most efficient filling option, as well.
